What is Compost Tea?
Compost tea is a water extract of compost that is actually brewed, contains soluble nutrients, and a diversity of beneficial soil bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and nematodes.
Compost teas will re-establish life in your soil by re-introducing these beneficial micro-organisms — so essential to healthy soil and plant life. They act as an army of tiny engineers, structuring the soil and feeding nutrients to your plants.
Why use Compost Tea?
Chemical based pesticides, fumigants, herbicides, some fertilizers, air and water pollution (chlorinated tap water), kill beneficial microorganisms in your soil, discouraging soil health and plant growth. Compost teas improve the life in the soil and on plant surfaces by replenishing these lost organisms. Over time and continued use, compost and compost tea of defined quality will build plant surface and beneficial soil microorganisms, instead of degrading them.
Some of the benefits of using compost tea include:
- Decrease in plant disease
- Improved plant growth and a reduction in transplant shock
- Enhanced nutrient cycling within the soil for vibrant, healthy plants
- Accelerated decomposition of dead plant material and toxins
- Reduced personal and environmental exposure from potentially harmful chemicals (i.e. pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers) by reduction of their use
- Allows reuse of organic waste
Note: Not all of these benefits will be observed in every case of tea application. Existing soil conditions, previous chemical contamination, and plant health will affect the level of benefits received. Several applications may be needed for the stabilization of natural processes.
